Holistic History When Did It Begin?
Holistic history got it's start long before the term holism was introduced by Jan Christiaan Smuts in his 1926 book, "Holism and Evolution". Jan was a South African statesman at the time he wrote his book which coined "Holism". Jan defined holism as "The tendency in nature to form wholes that are greater than the sum of the parts through creative evolution." Holism grew to the now widely excepted term holistic, combining with healing, arts, or even holistic medicine. Holistic history really sky rocketed in the 70's through the change in a more open life style which excepted the less excepted holism as the norm.
Holistic Healing TodayToday, holistic healing is now known as a more excepted approach to balancing people's lives and their health which brings together the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person in order to create a total sense of well being. Human beings have always had the power to heal themselves. In fact it is instinctive for us to use our hands to comfort pain or fear.
Holistic History Before Holism Although holistic history got it's name holism in 1926, holistic healing is far more ancient. It is dated back to at least 5,000 years ago. I'm not sure if we'll really know where it originated. Most historians believe it began in India and/or China. Holistic history practitioners practiced the idea of a healthy way of living, through the balance of body, mind, sole, and spirit living harmoniously with nature. An example was the great philosopher Socrates, who lived four centuries before Christ's birth. He believed in this idea and has taught that we should take the body as a whole and not by parts. Plato also an advocate of holism, suggesting to doctors that respect between the mind and body was accentual to health.
Past ThoughtsHolistic work has been recognized in several ancient healing traditions each emphasizing healthy living along with a true harmony with nature. The healers in ancient times saw no division between body, mind and spirit, so the energy through a person was known as a force which permeated trinity. When science merged with healing it shifted the focus away from spirituality. This divided the health professionals creating a singular focus on just the physical body. Our Birth RightThis development began a crusade to outlaw any healing outside the Cristian Church, and the elimination of healers and psychics. Healing was a lost art until 1951, where under reluctance it became legal again. Regretfully the centuries of persecution and restriction took there toll. So much so that even now in the present time there is so much ignorance and fear surrounding our healing birth right.
Awakening The Power Of HealingUnfortunately these historical events have grown both medicine and health care into something that lacks a spiritual base. But thanks to the 70's people have become less and less satisfied with the scientific explanations of their existence. This has started a new awakening for many people to begin their own spiritual search to a holistic life. Everyone of us can heal, just as Jesus did. We all have the gift of healing which is not new. It is just being re-awoken within all of us.
Holistic history has shown us that healing is no longer a last resort,
it is becoming a powerful force within all of us.
