Definition of holistic

Does the Definition of holistic confuse you? Better yet...

Have you ever talked with a person in the holistic field and discovered that they had a totally different definition then you do?

In order to understand what holistic means and to be able to talk with others about the subject we must first define holistic. Here is the definition according to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary.

Definition Of Holistic Is Defined As:
  1. of or relating to holism
  2. relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts (holistic medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the body)

Holism (a Greek word meaning all, entire, total) is the idea that all the properties of a given system (biological, chemical, social, economic, mental, linguistic, etc.) cannot be determined or explained by the sum of its component parts alone. Instead, the system as a whole determines in an important way how the parts behave.

The general principle of holism was concisely summarized by Aristotle in the Metaphysics: "The whole is more than the sum of its parts."

The term holism was introduced by the South African statesman Jan Smuts in his 1926 book, Holism and Evolution. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Smuts defined holism as "The tendency in nature to form wholes that are greater than the sum of the parts through creative evolution" (cf. Henri Bergson).

Now that we have the dictionary's definition of holistic, what does that really mean? Better yet...What does it mean to you?

Many people that study the different styles of healing use a holistic approach to helping others. Most healing practitioners are trained to balance and work on your four levels of existence.
  1. Physical - The body and manifested pain.
  2. Emotional -What you are feeling.
  3. Mental -What you are allowing yourself to think.
  4. Spiritual - Your capacity to love yourself and others.

So if you had a constant pain, a practitioner would try what we call the holistic approach which would look at all parts of your existence to find if there is any reason that might be contributing to the pain.

An example of a definition of holistic approach is from a practitioner friend of mine Chantelle who uses her training along with teaching you creative healing through meditation putting it all together to promote healing and inspiration. Chantelle also has a wonderful web site Creative Healing Meditation that has a free stress buster E-course that will provide you with comfort and reduce any stress you may be carrying around.

Another example is At the Mind Body Psychotherapy, Center where they use hypnosis to help clients break free from limiting fears, beliefs, anxieties, depression, addictions and many other issues using different mind/body therapies and hypnotherapy to quickly and powerfully integrate health, happiness and peace into people's lives.

These examples as you can see focus on healing the total person, where many other practitioners focus on healing but never look at what health means to the client. While in the process of healing, emotional issues may be found that are being disguised as the pain.

Working with your practitioner they would help you find the nature of your imbalance or energy blockage and assist you in removing it so that you can feel more balanced and at peace. What Is The
Definition of Holistic Approach

To create a desired result through knowledge and/or experience of working with the entire essence of a person. In other words looking at all parts that define you and balance them to bring about a wholeness.

In alternative medicine, a holistic approach to healing recognizes that the four elements of each person comprise a system. The practitioner then attempts to treat the whole person in its context, concentrating on the cause of the illness as well as symptoms.

What should I do?

There are many practitioners out there. Each one of them is different and each has skills that can work.

The first step would be to discover the practitioner and the holistic approach that you feel strongly about.

TWO RULES ABOUT THE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO REMEMBER:
  1. All Healing Comes From Within Yourself.
  2. The best holistic approach is one that assists the body in the healing process rather than merely suppressing the symptoms.

Holistic Care

Not only is holistic care more cost-effective, but a majority of people leave their treatments more satisfied due to the focus of getting to the cause, or root of the problem. This enables them to not just suppress or defeat it but to actually improve their entire well-being.

So to conclude the definition of holistic is the perfect solution to a problem that plagues us every day but as a "WHOLE" solution to the problems that modern medicine cannot always answer.

I believe that the holistic approach is a resource that will guide us toward a much healthier life bringing forward a more peaceful future. So now that you have the definition of holistic, it's time to search and figure out what natural care approach is right for you!
